Take a Summer Break from Stress

Enjoy fun and easy ways to relax.

When we think about summer break, we think about kids off from school or families heading out for vacation retreats. But there is another break you can take this summer — a break from stress. Whether you are overwhelmed by responsibilities at work or financial or family pressures at home, stress can be a debilitating condition that can affect your body, your mind, and your entire outlook on life.

With longer days, warmer temperatures, and breaks from traditional routines, summer is a great time to get out from under that stressful burden. Here are some fun and easy ways you can accomplish that:

  • Play hooky for a day. Take a day off and go to the beach, the lake, or anyplace else where you can escape from your daily responsibilities.
  • Go for a swim. Cooler minds will prevail in cool and refreshing water. Take a jump in the pool or your local swimming hole.
  • Listen to music. Music can soothe your soul. Instead of doing household chores in silence, put on some soft, relaxing music. Or, put on dance music and groove with your vacuum. Summer is also a great time to find a relaxing concert in the park.
  • Eat healthy. The foods you eat have a lot to do with how you feel. Take advantage of summer's fresh fruits and vegetables for healthy eating.
  • Exercise. Go for a long walk, take a bike ride, or do outdoor yoga. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which help reduce stress and pain.
  • Read a book. Enjoy a good and relaxing book on a hammock or in a lounge chair outside.
  • Go out with friends. Take your mind away from your house and the responsibilities that come with managing it by going out to dinner or a movie with friends.
  • Take up a new hobby. Thinking about taking up tennis or learning to play the guitar? Summer is a great time to try something new.
  • Eat outside. The summer season is short, so you'll want to take advantage of the nice weather while you have it. Go on a picnic or serve dinner out on your patio.
  • Take a break from electronics. Even though you may have to stay connected to your phone and computer during work hours, you don't have to after quitting time. Put those devices away and enjoy the short summer season.
  • Take your dog for a walk. Dogs are great companions and make excellent therapists.
Get up and out, and send that stress packing this summer!
